On December 31, 2009, at the edge of the SP-117 Montemaggiore Belsito Caccamo (PA), at Km 7, was found the carcass of a heron probably killed by poachers and hung a cartel as a trophy. The warning came from a passer-by who have taken a picture after he contacted the Lipu section of Palermo, which he promptly called the Municipal Police and the Office of the City of Caccamo Hygiene and sent a message to the Forest Detachment Caccamo (PA).
Unfortunately it is not the first time that these things happen, recently it has happened with Jan. 30, 2007 4 volpi uccise e poi messe in fila ai bordi della strada per Vittoria (RG), poi l’8 febbraio dello stesso anno un’altra volpe appesa nei pressi della diga Rosamarina (Caccamo).

river restoration Oreto, Praises environmental groups

Associations LAV, WWF, and Circus LIPU Erbavoglio Legambiente, agree with the Councillor's actions Ferrante, who has decided to act in a decisive improvement in the river last survivor of Palermo. In particular Ferrante shows how the Assessor's decision not to use unnecessary devastating as bulldozers and other heavy equipment directly nell'alveo river. In this way you are defending nature that slowly took over possession of the river at least until the last mile before the river mouth (Railway Bridge-Central Station). The removal of waste (including whole cars) and the denunciation of those who still insists on paying discharges into the river, it is indeed about a Councillor Ferrante from which we learn today its intention to close the truck a short distance a useful way, in fact, only and exclusively to those who come to unload materials directly into the river is. Think
that where a few years ago ran a sickening sewer, there is now a perennial river that is once again habitable for fish and frogs to below the Via Oreto is, in the opinion of LIPU, LAV, Legambiente and WWF-Erbavoglio Circle, a fact which exceptional measures such as those prepared by Nico Ferrante can only practical benefit.
It 's definitely now have completed the four associations, to give a boost to the activities necessary to get quickly to the establishment of the Park River Oreto.

Più volte alla LIPU sono pervenute segnalazioni acts of poaching along the Oreto right into the city limits.

The sighting is certainly exceptional, even if the river Oreto, while nell'inquinatissimo final section, subject to occasional pleasant surprises. The LIPU that monitors the city's fringe areas often seriously compromised by the naturalistic point of view has often seen, for example, the pretty little moorhens, kingfishers, herons, and small birds including bank piro piro and small carriers. Frequently even the swallows, martins, dancing the two species (white and yellow) as well as the gull real and the common gull. The Oreto does not, of course, the type of power needed to flamingos (brackish or salt water environments) but apparently has allowed at least two weeks for the survival of a young flamingo that had apparently lost his flock. The flamingos usually feed on algae, invertebrates and protozoa and a small salt-water crustacean (Artemia salina) which is responsible for the pigmentation of the pink flamingo. The food is passed through the slats in the beak of the flamingo.

From the data provided to us by ISPRA ring, it appeared that the young animal was born in Spain July 19, 2008 in wetlands near the city of Huelva in Andalusia, where it was ringed. It 'was possible to identify three months after birth in the Natural Reserve "Saline di Trapani and Paceco" in the company of a group of 30 flamingos. To saline was observed until 24 March 2009. Since then, the next sighting near the mouth of the river Oreto, or approximately 1780 km from the place where it was ringed!

PALERMO, bird market Ballaro ': SATISFACTION AND LAV LIPU FOR BRIGHT START OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT

LAV and LIPU thanked the Prefect of Palermo, the Commander of the Carabinieri Provincial Inspectorate Ripartimentale Forests for the brilliant intervention carried out at dawn on Sunday morning against the bird on that day occupy the market town of Ballarò. According to the two associations this intervention proves once again how difficult it is to eradicate the phenomenon of high potential criminal. The presidium of the square function, this time by the Carabinieri and the Guardia Forest Region of Sicily represents the view of Labour and LIPU, one of the best responses that the state wanted to, winning in a place that continues to manifest itself through its own laws incompatible with civilized life. Palermo continues to be one of the major Italian cities for the sale of protected wildlife and in particular of small finches captured and sometimes even exported to tens of thousands of people each year. LAV and LIPU addressed an appeal to all citizens of Palermo not to buy especially goldfinches, known provenance almost completely illegal. The two associations also observe that 50% of the animals died within a few hours the traumatic capture, while almost all of the remainder dies within one to two months maximum.

PALERMO, THE MARKET BALLARO 'CONTINUE THE QUIET TRADING wildlife

LAV and ask LIPU a new intervention of police forces

After the blitz in recent months the Police, the bird market Ballarò has started to be robust as before. In recent days, the volunteers of the LAV LIPU and conducted a survey in the square where hundreds of goldfinches were offered for sale by poachers.
Also this time the two associations have sent a petition to the Prefect of Palermo, the police, the weapon of the Carabinieri, the Municipal Police and the Forestry of the Sicilian Region informing them of the serious situation that has raged back and asking for their continued assistance to the phenomenon is finally eliminated.
The law considers the state wildlife heritage unavailable, and in particular bird species offered for sale, Ballaro caught with illegal methods, are protected by law. They could also be neither held much less traded. The crimes committed by the birds are so numerous and, among these, of particular interest is that of ill-treatment animals, resulting from the incredible, often fatal, conditions of detention.

PALERMO: Ballarò market AFTER REPORTING LIPU-LAV, FORESTRY AND POLICE SEIZED HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS

At 8:00 this morning 30 men between the Forest Region of Sicily (Palermo-Villagrazia Detachment) and Porta Montalto Police Station raided the Sunday Bird Ballarò stopping poachers 5 and seized more than 300 animals, mostly species of wild birds protected by law.

" thank the Forestry of the Sicilian Region Arma Carabinieri Palermo - Alida said Sacco and John Cumbo, responsible citizens of the LAV and LIPU - for large seizure of wildlife. The operation Today once again demonstrates the high level of delinquency that can occur in the square of Ballarò , in this case, all arranged the illegal trade in wildlife .

In recent days, LAV and LIPU had jointly sent a detailed display on the problem of the illegal market Ballarò the Prefect, the Police, the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri, the Provincial Command of the Police Station and the Forest Detachment-Palermo Villagrazia. With the above, it asked both the immediate suppression of the phenomenon that the continued defense of the square on Sundays.

PALERMO, THE MARKET BALLARO ' IMPERA L’ILLEGALITA’:

“ Tutti gli animali - hanno dichiarato Alida Sacco e Giovanni Cumbo, responsabili cittadini di LAV e LIPU – are caught in the wild with traumatic methods. Unfortunately - added the two leaders - latest posts of the police go back to the morning of March 16, when they were seized more than 300 goldfinches. Since then nothing has happened and Ballarò market were sold thousands of animals all protected by law. "

LAV LIPU and have therefore decided to engage directly with the Prefect of Palermo making him reach a detailed display also sent to the attention of the Police, the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri, the Commander of the Police and the leaders of the Forest Region Sicilian. According to the leaders and citizens of LAV LIPU, the advent of the autumn season, will lead to the massive arrival of flocks of small birds from northern Europe. It 's the business of the winter bird which replaces the capture of the spring migration and that of nestlings taken directly to the nest, which is typical - instead - the warm weather.

Italian law treats these animals as unavailable heritage of the state. The exercise of forms of hunting are prohibited by law, such as trapping, represents a major additional contribution to the depletion of wildlife. Small birds are captured by taking a mesh which often results death in 50% of the animals. Those who actually come to Ballarò represent a small percentage of animals captured.

" addition to the hunting offenses - loved Alicia Sacco and John Cumbo - should be emphasized as the abhorrent conditions of detention of birds (including the cages completely inadequate even to their minimal, essential movements) result in the violation of the full law on animal abuse, a fact also be punished by imprisonment. It is not clear as to the many Ballarò poachers convicted several times for various offenses, they can easily meet every Sunday morning than risking a complaint every 10-12 months. "

poaching

poaching poaching means to capture and trade of wild animals by methods not permitted and to produce profits, for example with the use of nets, traps, reference aids, etc. ...
But with the state also wants to end poaching hunting endangered species or not hunted, with weapons and ammunition are permitted in parks or reserves, where no hunting license, hunting during periods of silence, at different times from those listed in the hunting calendar or out of the hunting season and at any article in contravention of national law and regional hunting.

In Italy, the three areas most affected by poaching are :

Old
manifesto against poaching in the buzzard (adorn)

- The Strait of Messina in the Calabrian side, where for decades they shoot the buzzard during migration spring and autumn, purely for fun or silly traditions

- The Valleys Brescia, where the poachers make bow traps to catch robins (and other species) culinary purposes. That the animal is trapped paws are broken;

- Sardinia in Sulcis southern province of Cagliari, where the poachers capture turdidi for culinary purposes. Affixing a noose traps, where the bird was lured with a bait, died ASFIS. Vertical networks or nylon bird where birds die from it.

Cardellino (foto Toni Puma-AReA multimediale)

Having previously prepared the ground with flowers acts to attract goldfinches, hanging around the area of \u200b\u200bthe cage with finches as a draw - which, as it approaches the flock, they attract attention. In this phase, the trapper pulls the strings of the networks that are closed throughout the area prepared, imprisoning all the birds. At the time of capture, many birds die from stress or because they are pressed against each other.
The goldfinch is used to mate with the female canary, from which the result is a hybrid with singing ability far superior to those of the goldfinch same. These poor birds, once captured, are concentrated for months up to one hundred individual very small cages, known as 'receivers'. In this second phase as many people die because of lack of hygiene and stress caused by man. On Sunday mornings are sold to Palermo, in the historic market Ballaro before hundreds of people are well aware of the illegal trade.

Because of the long period of captivity, once seized by the police, be hard to fly away and survive. They are then delivered to the center where recovery followed by a phase of care and environment for the next release.

Lipu the last few months and the Lav of Palermo are active, through exposed to the Prefecture, Questura e Forestale e comunicati stampa, per cercare di debellare tale fenomeno.
For safety it is better to make a recommendation to the Forest Service's CITES fol 0917074088-0917074089-0917074091 numbers.
